There are 5 large fruit sprays with 2 each of 4 designs. The rims are smooth, painted gold, and encircled by a garland of laurel leaves. This is followed by a 3/4 wide band of deep cobalt blue. The fruit design covers the center of the plates. CONDITION: While this set of 9 deep plates is classified as used, the condition is excellent.
As is common with dinnerware of this era, there is some slight crazing on the plates, mostly on the back. On several plates, there is very slight browning under the glaze that is commonly associated with the crazing.
If this occurs on one of the pairs of plates, it is on the top plate in the set of 2. This is really very minor and certainly does not distract from the beauty of the set. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. DIMENSIONS: The deep plates have a diameter of 8 3/4" and a height of 1 1/16". Richardson founded the pottery in 1915 operating at the Gordon Pottery in Tunstall, UK and subsequently in 1934 opened the Britannia Pottery in Cobridge. This new pottery was a model for its time resulting in maximum production with a minimum of effort. The Gordon Pottery in Tunstall continued in operation until 1942 when it closed due to the war effort. The pottery continued in business until 1974 (when it was bought by Wedgewood) operating under the name of A.Richardson & Company of Staffordshire, UK and is considered one of the 1500 Stoke-on-Trent potters. The company is best known for its dinnerware. Crown Ducal Ware Made in England is cited in Geoffrey A. At the Gordon Pottery in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England.
